Seriously? 12 teeth removed and the Tooth Fairy won't reimburse my dental bill...

It’s been two months since I had all the remaining twelve teeth from my top jaw removed. I’m out of the constant pain phase and have been through the readjustment phase. I got to the point where I was used to the feeling of not having my top row of teeth. Barely eating and when I do, it’s a diet of baby-food-like meals.
Blended within an inch of its life and all I can do is swallow it.

Those first few days after the extractions are the toughest. The pain is constant so painkillers are taken on a regular basis; I’m sure, if you are going through this transition too your dentist has recommended a pain-killer cycle – stick to it, you’ll be glad you did.

Then there’s the new face in the mirror. You never realise how much your face is shaped by your teeth. When I first looked at myself, I’m not afraid to say I burst into tears. I looked old. I felt old. I looked and felt like an old homeless guy I’ve seen around the city occasionally. And now that judgement was turned around on me. And there was now nothing I could do (yet). Not that I judged homeless people too harshly, I just saw it as an indicator of poverty and a lack of care and to perfectly honest, a lack of personal care had gotten me to this point too.

The process is an emotional roller coaster. You need to stay positive no matter what. You will get through this.
