For me, today is four weeks with dentures incorporated
into my life. I’ve adjusted well and still need to adjust more. This is a long
road but a road that I must travel now.
In the beginning I didn’t think I would get through it. The
inability to eat normally was the toughest but I got through it, yes there was
some pain, and there is a little now when I eat.
I need to remember that the healing process takes time. It’s
not something I can rush through. Bone needs to heal and that’s a major thing. The
dentures, after using fixative, sit well in my mouth and allow me to bite and
chew, to a point. There is a little pain at the sides of my mouth, I can
actually feel a little bit of bone fragments sticking through so I may have to
wait for my next dental appointment to see if they need to be removed or if
they will settle.
One great piece of advice for eating with dentures is to
chew evenly around the mouth. Too much at one point can cause unnecessary wear
on the bone and gums, trying to chew on only one part makes the denture wobble,
it’s best to try and chew food on both sides at the same time.
Without fixative, eating is scary. The denture moves
around so much while I try and eat it’s almost impossible, so now putting
fixative on the denture is part of the daily routine.
Dentures, along with any change in life, takes time. We get
through it. We may stumble here or there, but we get through it.
If you’re on this journey too I wish you the best of
luck, stay strong and always stay positive.
